I’m a wine lover.
I´ve always had the fantasy that wine has a great capacity of creating atmospheres and moods, generating special bonds between places and people. Perhaps because of that active connection between earth and grape, that allows the vine to grow and to become what it will; men are fused with that same logic, and wine permits them to get in touch with themselves, with their roots, their essence in some sort of way. But that is just my fantasy. However, that "logic of wine" was what allowed us to make this movie. It was thanks to it that we were able to show the world of the vine and explore its multiple faces, finding on the way a real character, Charlie Arturaola. It was there that the story we were looking for appeared. The story we wanted to tell everyone about. A story that needed no semantic effort and that just by being showed would reveal its strong, robust but intrinsic meaning. Charlie's struggle is potent, constantly fighting to belong to an industry which he loves, but at the same time is demanding him to change and become someone else. In a few words, that would be enough. Charlie must give up on himself, if he wants to fit in. From that moment on, the loss of his palate, one of men´s most primary senses, that connection with those first personal precepts; if you deny your identity, you deny your palate. We are our memory, that museum that has been built out of our own experiences, and that is bound to our senses as we move on through life. Deny your memory and you will deny your senses. Carlos became "Charlie", a theatrical, showman with no place for memories; as a consequence of this behavior, the loss of his past, his roots, his family and his old social life. That is why all along the search of his palate, Charlie is actually searching for his identity. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity of having Charlie opening up in front of our cameras, unveiling the most brutal honesty, telling us his intimate stories and most profound drama, showing us a world of real and intense characters, that fill every minute with unrepeatable authenticity. I had heard a lot about the blurriness between documentary and fiction, but its from this moment on, that I can, from my own personal experience, eliminate those irrelevant and obsolete terms from my vocabulary. Fiction was a road, that lead reality and honesty to the spotlight. Like a famous poet used to say: "reality can only be revealed when it's enlightened by the ray of poetry" Before any premiere is showed, before anyone has seen the film; this movie has already fulfilled its objective: it has changed the lives of those that have been involved in it: Charlie, without any doubt, and myself in a very profound way. I will probably try and stay closer to my roots, my essences and connected to my palate.
